African Stock Markets Are Having a Breakout Year, Outpacing Global Benchmarks

While South Africa grapples with migration unrest, a different story is unfolding elsewhere on the continent’s financial markets: several African stock exchanges have been posting standout returns this year, with investors pointing to bourses in Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria and Zambia as among the best-performing in the world, comfortably outpacing global benchmarks like the S&P 500.

The rally reflects a mix of factors that have made African frontier and emerging markets newly attractive: currency stabilisation in several economies after years of volatility, corporate earnings growth in banking and consumer sectors, and a wave of investor interest in markets seen as undervalued relative to their growth prospects. For exchanges that have historically struggled with thin trading volumes and limited international attention, the run has been a notable reversal — with local investors and diaspora buyers alike reportedly driving much of the demand.

The performance gap with global indices has drawn attention from international fund managers looking for returns outside the more crowded US and European markets, particularly as questions persist about stretched valuations in developed-market tech stocks. For African policymakers, the rally offers a rare opportunity: stronger equity markets can lower the cost of capital for local companies, encourage more businesses to list publicly, and give governments an additional argument for attracting foreign portfolio investment.

Whether the momentum holds will depend on factors largely outside any single market’s control — global interest rate policy, commodity prices, and investor risk appetite chief among them. But for now, several of the continent’s exchanges are enjoying a spotlight that frontier African markets rarely receive, at a moment when the rest of the world’s financial headlines are focused elsewhere.
