A delegation of Angolan students has won a total of 90 gold, silver and bronze medals at the international Academic Olympiad, held from August 2 to 9, 2026 in Oxford, England. The result caps months of intensive preparation and places Angola among the standout nations in this high level academic competition.
The 80 member Angolan delegation competed against students from around the world across several scientific and language subjects. According to Antonio Pacavira, president of the National Association of Private Education, who spoke to reporters after the competition, the strongest results came in mathematics, English, chemistry and biology.
Among the highlights, a silver medal in chemistry marked a historic first for Angolan students in that subject. The delegation also earned several bronze medals in biology, underlining the strength of its scientific preparation.
The achievement comes as Angola pushes to strengthen its education system more broadly. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation has reaffirmed its commitment to improving education quality and reducing dropout rates as part of the National Development Plan 2023 to 2027. Private sector initiatives have complemented these public efforts, with academies and training centers working to prepare thousands of young Angolans in the scientific and technological skills the global job market now demands.
The Oxford Academic Olympiad ranks among the most competitive international school contests, bringing together delegations from many countries each year for demanding tests in mathematics, science and languages. For a country like Angola, working to diversify its economy beyond oil, building human capital and scientific research stands out as a stated strategic priority. The delegation’s success is expected to raise the international profile of Angola’s education system and encourage more students to pursue scientific fields of study.
