Mastercard and the Nigerian platform Busha have struck a partnership aimed at making digital asset transfers easier across Nigeria, in a market where demand for cryptocurrencies keeps climbing. The deal centers on the rollout of Mastercard Crypto Credential, a solution that replaces long, error-prone blockchain addresses with simple aliases built from an email address or phone number.
The idea is straightforward on paper but matters a great deal in practice. Before each transfer goes through, the technology confirms that the recipient can actually receive the digital asset on the intended blockchain. That single check sharply cuts the risk of failed transfers or funds sent to the wrong address, a mistake that in the world of cryptocurrency often means money lost for good. In Nigeria, eligible Busha users are automatically assigned this identifier, with no extra setup required on their end.
One of the system’s biggest advantages lies in its interoperability. Aliases created through Crypto Credential work not only between Busha users but also across other platforms and wallets connected to the Mastercard ecosystem, considerably widening the range of possible transactions beyond a single app.
Gabriel Swanepoel, who leads Mastercard’s business in Africa, framed the goal as making digital asset transfers feel as natural as any everyday digital payment. Busha’s chief executive, Michael Adeyeri, emphasized the accessibility and reliability the new feature brings to local users. Busha now stands among the first African digital asset exchanges to activate the function, a move that bolsters its reputation as a regulated, compliance-minded platform.
The partnership fits into a broader trend playing out across the continent, where cryptocurrency use is rising on the back of personal investment, remittances sent home by the diaspora, and cross-border trade. For industry players, building infrastructure that is both dependable and easy to use has become close to a prerequisite for turning that enthusiasm into lasting, large-scale adoption.
