Dakar, August 18, 2026. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) officially confirmed on Tuesday the appointment of Patrick Vieira as head coach of the Senegal men’s national team. The former French international takes over from Pape Bouna Thiaw, who was dismissed after the 2026 World Cup.
The decision was made unanimously. Meeting in an extraordinary videoconference session on Monday, August 17, the FSF’s Emergency Committee approved the arrival of the 1998 World Cup winner on the Lions’ bench. In its statement, the federation explained the choice as part of its ambition to put in place a high level technical setup in line with the country’s sporting goals.
The administrative and contractual details of his appointment are still being finalized between the two parties. The date of his official presentation will be announced later.
This change comes after a disappointing 2026 World Cup for Senegal, who were eliminated in the round of sixteen by Belgium, losing 3 to 2 after extra time. As early as July 11, the FSF had begun the process of parting ways with Pape Thiaw and his staff, opening the search for a successor.
Vieira’s name had been circulating for several weeks, though the federation had also considered other options, including Hervé Renard.
Born on June 23, 1976 in Dakar, the 50 year old Vieira returns to his native country. A 1998 World Cup winner and 2000 European champion with France, the former Arsenal captain built most of his playing career in France, England and Italy before moving into coaching.
On the bench, his career took him to New York City FC in MLS, OGC Nice, Crystal Palace, RC Strasbourg and most recently Genoa in Serie A, which he left at the end of last season. This will be his first job as a national team head coach.
Vieira inherits a Senegalese squad that has ranked among Africa’s best teams for years, two time African champion in 2021 and 2025, and a regular at World Cups. His task now is to bring fresh momentum after the World Cup disappointment, gradually renew the squad and build his coaching staff in the coming weeks.
