Sahel Bloc Summons Nigerian Envoy Over President’s Remarks on Regional Security

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have raised the tone with Nigeria. On Thursday, August 6, in Ouagadougou, representatives of the three Sahel Alliance of States (AES) countries received the chargé d’affaires of the Nigerian embassy to express their deep dissatisfaction.

At issue are recent remarks by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the security situation in the Sahel region. These statements were evidently poorly received by the transitional authorities of the three countries, who chose to make this known directly through diplomatic channels.

The meeting took place in what regional media describe as a tense atmosphere, with no detailed official statement yet specifying the exact content of the Nigerian president’s remarks.

Since their progressive break with ECOWAS, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have increasingly taken joint positions toward neighboring countries, particularly on security issues in the Sahel belt, where instability linked to armed groups remains a major concern. Nigeria, a regional heavyweight and direct neighbor of Niger, occupies a particular place in this equation, notably through its past role within ECOWAS and its influence on West African security matters.

No official reaction from Abuja has been reported so far. It remains to be seen whether this diplomatic incident will remain isolated or signal a broader deterioration in relations between the AES and Nigeria.
