Senegal: Patrick Vieira Takes Charge of the Teranga Lions, With CAN 2027 and the 2030 World Cup as Targets

Vieira's arrival comes after a disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign for Senegal, who were eliminated in the round of 16 after squandering a two goal lead against Belgium. That result cost Pape Thiaw his job, despite having led the team to an Africa Cup of Nations title and a CHAN triumph during his tenure.

After weeks of negotiations, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has officially appointed Patrick Vieira as head coach of the men’s national team. The former French international, born in Dakar, succeeds Pape Thiaw and inherits a clearly defined mission: lead the Teranga Lions to the final of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and secure qualification for the 2030 World Cup.

Present in Dakar since late July, Patrick Vieira held a series of talks with federation officials before the two sides agreed on the main terms of the contract. The official announcement was delayed while the FSF finalized the terms of Pape Thiaw’s departure, including the payment of his severance package. At 50, Vieira has signed a four year contract, with a monthly salary between 35 and 45 million CFA francs, higher than what his predecessor had negotiated. The project has been dubbed « Patrick Vieira Vision 2030. »

Vieira’s arrival comes after a disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign for Senegal, who were eliminated in the round of 16 after squandering a two goal lead against Belgium. That result cost Pape Thiaw his job, despite having led the team to an Africa Cup of Nations title and a CHAN triumph during his tenure. Vieira had been among the leading candidates to take over, alongside former Saudi Arabia and Morocco coach Hervé Renard.

A 1998 World Cup winner with France as a player, Patrick Vieira went on to build a lengthy coaching career at European clubs, including spells at New York City FC, OGC Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa. His Senegalese roots weighed heavily in the federation’s decision, alongside his top level coaching experience.

The full makeup of the staff who will assist Vieira has yet to be confirmed, though several collaborators from his previous club spells, including his longtime assistant Christian Lattanzio, could join him in Dakar.

Beyond the immediate sporting targets, Vieira will be tasked with rebuilding the squad and giving greater prominence to homegrown talent, as the national team looks to move quickly past its World Cup disappointment while laying the groundwork for the medium term.
