Football on both sides of the Atlantic has just turned two significant pages within the span of a few days. Lionel Messi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have each announced the end of their careers with their national teams, two decisions shaped by starkly different circumstances yet both closing chapters that stretched over more than two decades.
It was through a message posted on Instagram, on Monday August 31, that Lionel Messi announced he would no longer wear the Albiceleste jersey. « After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the Argentina national team, » wrote the player, now 39 years old. He admitted the decision « hurt, and still hurts deep down, » while insisting he understood the time had come.
The Inter Miami forward closes out a journey that began back in 2005, one built on 207 caps and 125 goals for Argentina, an all-time national record. The decision comes several weeks after the 2026 World Cup final, lost to Spain on penalties following extra time on July 19. Messi had shown no signs of decline on the pitch beforehand. He finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists, confirming right up to the end his standing as the finest player of his generation. He now feels he has « nothing left to give » the national team and wants to make room for the younger talents coming through.
His record with Argentina remains extraordinary. After years of falling short in finals, he finally lifted the Copa América in both 2021 and 2024, before capturing the long-awaited World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
The break is considerably rougher on the Gabonese side. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang confirmed on September 2, in an interview with Canal+, that he would not play for the Panthers again. At 37, the Deportivo La Coruña striker leaves the national side as its all-time top scorer, with 40 goals in 83 appearances.
Unlike Messi’s, this exit carries none of the calm of a farewell. The former Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea and Marseille forward says he was deeply affected by the backlash following Gabon’s group-stage elimination at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Morocco. The Panthers lost every match in their group, and Gabonese president Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema reportedly reacted with fury to the result. Aubameyang, already absent for the final group match against Ivory Coast, faced harsh criticism in the aftermath. He did not mince words describing what he says he went through. « They humiliated me, » he told the cameras.
This is not the first time the Laval-born striker has stepped away. Back in May 2022, he had already announced his first international retirement, following an Africa Cup of Nations marked by a Covid infection and heart damage diagnosed mid-tournament, before eventually returning to the side the following year.
Coach Sébastien Migné will now have to manage without his captain for Gabon’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers, a tournament to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The Panthers will face Morocco on September 25, then Niger between September 27 and 29, without their all-time leading scorer. On a personal level, Aubameyang is enjoying a strong run at club level. Since arriving at Deportivo La Coruña, he has already scored three goals in three matches.
Beyond their opposite styles of departure, one steeped in gratitude and nostalgia, the other tinged with resentment, both announcements point to the same underlying shift. A generation of champions is handing the baton to the next. For both Argentina and Gabon, the focus now turns to rebuilding, without two of the faces who carried their colors on the international stage for more than twenty years.
